Reception

Welcome to Reception!

We are delighted to share with you our Reception setting where your child’s exciting school journey begins. We provide a nurturing, play-based environment where we inspire children through our learning and play but also promote the children to be independent; to be able to make their own choices in where their learning will go next.

We have created a high quality and exciting curriculum which stimulates the children and provides different experiences to support their learning. Everything we do promotes the three prime areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage as we believe they underpin a child’s development and future;

Personal, Social and Emotional Development - We help children build confidence, friendships, and independence whilst thinking about theirs and other’s feelings and emotions.

Physical Development - From outdoor play to fine motor activities, we support healthy growth and coordination

Communication and Language - We foster strong speaking and listening skills through songs, stories, and conversations.

We also focus on Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World – the specific areas of learning.

Throughout the day, we have two main inputs for the whole class where we focus on specific skills we would like the children to learn. We also have at least one English and one Mathematics activity each week in small groups to support the children’s learning further. Alongside this, we teach Phonics every day. We follow the Read Write Inc scheme and children work in small groups led by an adult with others who are of a similar ability.

The rest of the day is dedicated to play. We believe that play can give children endless opportunities to learn and supports their enjoyment at school. We have resources that children can access all year in our classrooms and outside. This allows children to come back to and extend their play further whether it be by themselves, with friends or with one of our highly skilled adults. We also provide enhancements in our different areas that provide new opportunities and develops their previous ideas. We love to follow the children’s interests too and this can take our learning in lots of different directions!

Each of our three classrooms has a home corner, an arts and crafts area, book corners, small world equipment and blocks along with many other toys and equipment. We also have 2 other rooms inside which we use for nurture groups and interventions. We also have access all day to a large outside space where the children can explore the water area, the sand pit, the building area, the mud kitchen, a playground to run/ride bikes/scooters and a developing magical garden and small world area.

We know how important it is to have good communication with parents and we do this through our daily conversations at the end of the day, workshops to support learning, events where the children’s carers can come into our classrooms and Class Dojo. On Dojo, we show photos in our ‘closed’ class groups of what the children have been doing, share what we have been learning and carers can message the teacher directly if they have a question.

We can’t wait to welcome you and please feel free to contact the school if you have any other questions.

Year One

We have a lovely year planned in year one this year. We begin the year celebrating our families and thinking about belonging: belonging to Fox, Hedgehog and Swan class! We then take ourselves on a literary journey to the woods, reading The Gruffalo and Stickman. These topics enhance our writing and art activities, as well as giving us the opportunity to explore early geography and history understanding.

At Christmas time, we enjoy singing Christmas songs and putting on a show to tell the Christmas story. Some of the children do an extra concert as part of Mrs Bowley’s singing club. We enjoy sharing our art and creative skills at our Christmas after school fayre.

The new year brings a topic of Fairy tales, where the children get to listen to, read and act out some of their favourites. This is finished with a visit from The Rainbow Theatre with a Fairy Tale workshop, where the children get to dress up as their favourite character. We love reading ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and planning and making bridges in DT for the troll to hide underneath! The book, ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ inspires us to make and eat our own pancakes. We write out the recipes for our grown -ups to follow at home.

In our science learning we enjoy learning about animals, understanding the properties of birds, mammals and fish. We are also great gardeners and plant a bean. We learn how to look after it and even to taste the beans that we manage to grow.

‘Supertato’ is our favourite book in the summer term, helping us to design and make our own ‘super veg’ and write our own amazing stories. This is finished with a ‘Superhero’ day where we get to dress up as a superhero and go to super hero school. If successful we graduate with superhero skills!

As we are lucky enough to live so near the sea, we finish the year with a topic about the ‘Seaside’. We enjoy pirate stories and invite the Rainbow Theatre back for a ‘Pirate Day’ where we get to dress up as pirates and learn some old stories.

We work really hard but have so much fun along the way! 😊

Year Two

Welcome to Year Two – A Year of Wonder, Words and Numbers!

In Year Two, learning becomes an adventure! Our young explorers will dive under the sea to uncover ocean secrets, travel back in time to witness the Great Fire of London, and brave the icy Antarctic with Ernest Shackleton. We’ll journey to the heart of Kenya, wander through the vibrant rainforest, and reflect on all our discoveries through the theme of Journeys.

Along the way, children will develop their skills across a wide range of writing styles—from storytelling and poetry to reports and persuasive pieces—bringing their ideas to life with creativity and confidence. In maths, we build strong foundations through hands-on learning, problem-solving and reasoning, helping every child become a confident mathematician.

Year Two is more than a classroom—it's a passport to the world, where every lesson is a new adventure!
